At the moment of equinox, the center of the visible Sun is directly above the equator, and the sunlight hits the ground perpendicularly on equator.<br \/>\nGiven this condition, we can determine, or at least roughly estimate our local latitude by measuring the length of the shadow at the moment of local noon.<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: Stick a pole perpendicularly onto the ground, or find something standing vertically up that can cast a sharp tipped shadow on a flat ground.<br \/>\nStep 2: Know your local noon time using apps or website such as timeanddate.com<br \/>\nStep 3: Measure and record the length of the shadow every 5 minutes (or shorter interval for higher accuracy) for the span of 15 minutes before and after the local noon.<br \/>\nStep 4: Using the shortest shadow measurement, together with the height of the object casting the shadow, you can determine the angle of the shadow using simple trigonometry function for tangent.<br \/>\nStep 5: Obtain the actual latitude of you location using a GPS or Google Maps for comparison.<\/p>\n<p>Try it out and see how close you get!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vernal or spring equinox for northern hemisphere happens today at 5:37 p.m. MYT.
